Hawk-eyed netizens were quick to check former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's Mpesa balance when the flamboyant politician took to social media to send money to his fans.

In his now regular late-night insta - live sessions which he'd dubbed 'sending sadaka to watu wangu', the former county boss who had shared his contacts received a call from a female fan who requested him to assist financially.

"Send me 'something' that can get me to sleep. I have so many bills I can't get my mind to sleep,' she requested.

As proof that he was not chasing clout, the former County boss took a video while making the transaction, leaving his account details for all to see. Unfazed by the balance display from the application's user interface and proof of his expenditure, the flamboyant county boss displayed an awe-inspiring mobile cash balance of Ksh 295,000, with a monthly expenditure of Ksh 3,417,793 and an estimated average expenditure of Ksh 142, 000 daily.

As would be expected, numerous calls ensued with many of his followers pleading with him to help them financially.

Since his impeachment, the former city boss has maintained a low political profile, only choosing to interact with his followers on social media where he's assumed the role of a 'blogger' characterised by 'exposes', news updates and live sessions besides conducting his usual philanthropic ways in the city.

Early this week, while clad as Santa, he visited city health facilities bearing gifts for patients. Indeed, Sonko ni gharama.
