Big shots glide into quarters: Electrifying action on at RFUEA Grounds
Christie Sevens defending champions Kabras Sugar, Impala, Kenya Harlequin, Nakuru, Kenya Commercial Bank and Mwamba all sailed into today’s quarter-finals after winning their first two group matches, at RFUEA Grounds, yesterday.
Kabras kicked off their campaign with a 38-7 win over Group A opponents Strathmore before thrashing MKU Thika 34-5.
It was also a promising start for Quins as they hammered MKU 38-12 before seeing off Strathmore 19-10 to sail through with a game to spare against Kabras.
Quins went ahead through David Ambunya’s converted try with Jo Aredo making it 12-0 at the stroke of halftime.
The students came into the second half a more rejuvenated side, grounding an unconverted try, but Aaron Oforywoth scored and converted his own try for Quins to open a 14-point gap. Strathmore scored another unconverted try late in the game, but Quins held their nerves to secure a much needed victory.
In Group B, Impala mauled Mean Machine 36-15 and Kisii 34-12 respectively as Nakuru silenced Kisii 29-10 before beating Machine 12-7.
Tim Makiya scored a brace of tries with Ian Minjere, Sammy Motari and Davis Motari grounding a try each to inspire Impala to their second win of the day over Kisii.
Monate Akwei also landed twice as Nakuru edged out Machine 36-12 to advance to the last eight.
KCB secured top spot in Group D with a 24-0 win over Blak Blad. Shaban Ahmed scored and converted to give KCB a 7-0 lead at the interval. Arthur Owira extended the lead after the restart, the bankers going 12-0 up. Kenya international Jacob Ojee made it 17-0 before Isaac Njoroge converted Andrew Amonde’s try for a 24-0 score at the break.
Veteran Humphrey Khayange and Ronnie Omondi touched down as Mwamba pulled off a 22-15 win over series leaders Homeboyz before humiliating Western Bulls 30-5 in Group C matches.
