Residents of Ruaraka’s Laundry Slums in Nairobi woke up to a rude shock after a man stabbed his beloved wife on Tuesday night, May 16, after differences surrounding an Ugali meal.

The man, identified as Patrick Odundo Adera, is reported to have complained about the “small” portion of the rare meal that he had to share with the children on Tuesday night. An event that preceded his wife sleeping on a mattress on their floor with the children.

According to the man’s neighbours, Odundo’s wife left for bed after serving him the meal, but the complaints from her husband persisted through the night.

“He (Odundo) left his house later in the night claiming to be going to the toilet. On coming back, he found the door locked, forcing one of his children to open the door, before the fatal scene unfolded,” narrated a neighbor of the ill-fated couple.

According to Lucy Wambui, Odundo stabbed his wife repeatedly, despite calls to her children, wooing them to save her.

“She called on one of the children to grab the knife from his father, but the knife fell down. When the child went to pick it up, the man kicked him, leaving the child with an elbow injury,” said Lucy.

The couple’s two children estimated to be between nine and six years screamed and banged on neighbor’s walls to alert them of the gruesome act.

“I heard screams from the two children seeking urgent help and on accompanying them to their home, found their mother lying almost lifeless while their father had ran away,” said Lucy.

Acquaintances of the family describe Odundo as a man who had to be pushed to pay house rent and to have separated with his wife, before moving in to the slums months ago.
