Five officials of Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago's campaign team were seriously injured when unknown people attacked them on Saturday night.

The five, including Mr Mandago's chief campaigner Jairus Mutai, were accosted in Langas by assailants who overtook their vehicle and blocked them.

The incident, which took place on the Eldoret-Kapsabet road, left the five with head, eye and neck injuries.

"Our team, which was headed to Eldoret, was being followed by unknown people who blocked our car and forced us out. They attacked us but did not steal anything. We suspect the motive was political," said Mr Mutai.

He said the attackers fled when a crowd came to their rescue.

Langas OCPD Wilson Abduba said police were investigating the matter.

"Our officers are piecing together details of the incident and the vehicle that was allegedly used by the attackers is in our custody," he said.

The five officials were saved by good Samaritans who rushed to the scene in response to their distress call before police arrived.

Speaking after recording statements at Langas Police Station, the victims called for justice to prevail and maintained that the attack was politically-motivated.

"Politics come and go and it is our appeal that we live in peace. Politicians should caution their supporters against creating division," said Ezekiel Maritim, one of the officials.

The incident comes barely a week after governor aspirant Kiprop Bundotich alias Buzeki's convoy was attacked as it entered town last weekend.

Vehicles belonging to the businessman, who is seeking to unseat Mandago as an independent candidate, were extensively damaged as police were forced to lob teargas to disperse rowdy youths.

Buzeki has vowed to be on the ballot after he disputed the outcome of the Jubilee Party nominations.
