Learning at a primary school in Naivasha was paralysed after pupils started screaming, claiming they were being attacked by unseen spirits.

Panic gripped Ngondi Primary School in Kongoni as pastors and parents rushed to the institution to assist the pupils.

Only girls were affected by the phenomenon.

Parents demanded the school be closed, accusing some neighbours of bewitching their daughters.

According to Samson Karimi, a parent, pupils started complaining that they were being strangled by unknown spirits on Monday.

Karimi said around 10 schoolgirls were attacked on Monday and a similar incident occurred on Tuesday morning.

"We are worried by the incident. Despite calling religious leaders to pray for the affected students, the problem is getting worse by the day," he said.

The sentiments were echoed by another parent, Ann Waithera, who said they were in darkness as to the cause of the queer happening.

Naivasha Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Opondo attributed the attack to hysteria, adding that prayers conducted by religious leaders had worked.
