So you just landed that job, and deep down you are exhilarated, you just can’t wait to start off and showcase your skills. You undergo induction for some period and like a plane on the run way you are ready to take off. During the induction period you meet lots of people, some whom you like, others whom you think are too serious for life and you just keep a safe distance.

So, you are now posted to your duty station and you are confident that you will hack it. Hold on your horses, the drama is yet to unfold.

You see, your colleagues have been on this job for decades and you are just a freshman trying to start out. Day one you struggle to fit in, you still are not familiar with your workmates. You have already developed a soft spot for one guy who was extremely helpful and understanding, and just like nature would have it, you already hate some lady who kept sneering and shouting at you for every single thing you did.

But the reality is, on a new job, there will be one very helpful person, who will help you settle down and another who will want to prove to you that they are veterans, you just have to fit in or go hang.

Fast forward to month one, you have settled and are familiar with your job, what you first viewed as rocket science is now pretty easy and you just manoeuvre around it easily. You now look forward to every working day because your work has transformed into a hobby. Besides, you now have a handsome relationship with your bank, and this becomes your every day motivation.

You keep on perfecting your skills amidst all challenges and within no time, it becomes a routine and boredom begins to creep in. You no longer look forward to a working day and once you get to that office, the toilet becomes your bestie and the wall clock suddenly becomes admirable. This might be a sign dear, that its now time to take another step forward.Evaluate where you lie on the hierarchy of needs and identify your next course of action to take you up on to the next.

If your company does not provide opportunity for growth, you feel that there is too much brain drain, then pen down that resignation letter and take a leap of faith. The basic things that any sane person craves for are: professional, financial and personal growth. If you have stagnated in either of the three for a long period, then it is time to re-strategize.

Other occurrences besides resignation, such as promotions and termination are also inevitable. You wake up one morning looking forward to a fruitful day at work and what greets you is a termination letter. Of course this throws you deep down into a pit of misery, but you got to rise, dust yourself up, pop up your colour and step forward.

Face the world with optimism and it will give you a pleasant reward, better things lie ahead, you just have to be bold enough to walk towards the unknown. The former might also happen. You are given a promotion at work and you are so excited that you can’t wait to get home and share the news with your folks.

Your feeling lies only within you, it is not mutual. All sorts of rumors will fly around. Of you sleeping your way to the top, of you bribing your way to that position. Let that not weigh you down. If your promotion was by virtue of merit, congratulations, keep doing what you do. If it was courtesy of any v-monologue, well, they say the end justifies the means, but people are judging.

Lastly, you got to take your time to learn your colleagues personalities. Draw a thick line between work and personal life if need be. Learn how to deal with those people who stab your back and fake a concern for your bleeding, the bosses pets, and above all ensure you learn a new lesson on a daily basis. Never get to a comfort zone, learn to satisfy your ambitions.
