Nationa Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi wants senators funded equally as MPs to effectively carry out their roles in counties.

Muturi said both senators and the MPs need to be properly facilitated to improve their services to their constituents.

"The roles of senators extend across the counties in which they were elected and there is no way they can do their work across the regions without being given money. You cannot expect someone to spend his salary to respond to various social needs of his people when he should be given funds for that," he said.

Muturi was speaking at Eronge Adventist Primary School, Nyamira County, on Friday where he led a funds drive.

He expressed concerns that Parliament was under attack by the civil society. Muturi said the civil society was fighting the House by planning to reduce powers of the Parliamentary Service Commission, which oversees MPs' welfare and services.

He was referring to the ongoing court tussle between some civil society organisations and Parliament over enactment of National Government Constituency Development Fund Act.

The Speaker said Parliament should be left alone by civil society groups that went to court to seek nullification of the new law, terming it unconstitutional.

Muturi said there was need to respect the law that safeguards the PSC's autonomy.

MPs Ben Momanyi (Borabu) and Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache South) said they will fight all attempts to take away the CDF kitty from MPs.

Nyamira Senator Kennedy Okong'o also said legislators should be well facilitated for them to carry out their duties efficiently.
