Deputy President William Ruto

Deputy President William Ruto Wednesday said he is willing to record a statement over the murder of businessman Jacob Juma.

Mr Ruto was responding to allegations by former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo and a tweet from Juma's twitter account during an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday night.

"I want to tell Kenyans and the country that I had nothing to do with the life and death of Jacob Juma," he said, adding that those who killed the businessman would be brought to book.

"Maybe you should look for time to get Mr Jirongo here so that he can tell the country what he means," the DP said.

Country’s attention

The Deputy President said police had not asked him to give a statement.

"Whenever the police want my statement, I will give it freely any day, any time and anywhere," he said.

"I am a law-abiding citizen and I want to help in getting to the bottom of this death and indeed of any Kenyan."

Ruto criticised the Opposition for linking him to scandals in a bid to divert the country's attention from issue-based politics.

"I have become the Opposition's punching bag, so to speak. When Moses Wetang'ula has problems with his wife, one of the newspapers wrote that Mr Wetang'ula's wife was seen in my office. I do not know Wetang'ula's wife, I have never met her," he said.

During an investigative piece run on KTN two weeks ago, CID boss Ndegwa Muhoro declined to respond to questions whether the police had summoned the DP to record a statement over Juma's murder.

Ruto maintained the Jubilee government would run issue-based campaigns next year and accused the Opposition of creating anarchy and engaging in destructive politics.

Juma was shot dead by unknown people while driving past Lenana School last month. His car had 10 bullet holes when it was found with the engine running shortly after the 9.30pm incident and door open.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said the businessman was driving from his bar in Westlands at around 9.30pm to his Karen home when he was shot by gunmen who escaped on a motorbike.
