The mother of a Garrissa University terror attack victim still in hospital has died. Josephine Waitherero's family believes she succumbed to depression due to the state of her daughter.
Her husband, Julius Gikonyo, of Gathaithi village in Kahuro sub-county, said his wife died over Christmas.
Their daughter, Rachael Munjiru Gikonyo, is bedridden at the National Spinal Injury Hospital in Nairobi, which reportedly made her mother lapse into depression as the two were very close.
Ms Waitherero is reported to have developed complications immediately after her daughter was confined to a wheelchair and relocated to the spinal injury hospital.
The family has been struggling to raise Sh2 million to enable Rachael get specialised treatment in India following the terrori attack in which she was shot seven times in her legs and back.
Exhausted resources
Mr Gikonyo said the family had exhausted all its resources travelling to visit Rachael in Nairobi.
Gikonyo, a motorcycle mechanic at Gathaithi market, said immediately the university student was placed on a wheelchair, her mother's health deteriorated.
The family said it would welcome assistance for the burial on Friday and for Rachael's treatment in India as recommended by her doctors.
On Sunday, Murarandia ward representative Martin Macharia and other Kahuro leaders convened at the family residence for burial arrangements. "We are appealing for any assistance to help this family which was badly hit by the Garrissa University tragedy," said the MCA.
