NAIROBI: A parent has sued a prestigious school in Nairobi for expelling her child.
She wants the court to issue orders restraining the school from kicking her son out and effecting a transfer to another school.
The parent accused Light Academy, a school run by Omeriye Foundation, of expelling her son, a move she maintains is illegal and aimed at intimidating and embarrassing her.
She accused the institution of trying to intimidate her by expelling the boy in a bid to arm-twist her into giving up his place in the school.
She accused the school of denying him books that are freely provided for the students and using vulgar and abusive language on the minor.
She also claimed the institution subjected her son to punishment that exceeded the offence, ignored cases of bullying and made accusations against him.
The school's interference, the aggrieved mother said, has impacted negatively on the child and led to post-traumatic stress disorder. After observing that her child was disturbed, she stated in a suit filed yesterday, she took him to Nairobi Counselling Services for treatment.
'WILD ALLEGATIONS'
She said her child remained at home for two weeks in the first school term that commenced on January 6 but was allowed back after his father intervened.
The school, she added, later issued an expulsion letter dated January 5, that made wild allegations against the minor.
"My belief that this is a well orchestrated pursuit to expel my child is perpetuated by the fact that Light Academy was established and run by Omeriye Foundation, a charitable trust that assists needy children through scholarships but has now grown to be an elitist high-cost school that has no place for my child who resides in the sprawling Kibera slums," she said.
