West Pokot, Kenya: Three people perished in a grisly road accident after the lorry they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a ditch at Kamatira, along Kapenguria-Lodwar highway Wednesday night.
Eye witnesses said the driver of the ill-fated vehicle, which was ferrying timber, lost control after the brakes failed at a sharp bend along the steep slopes, a few kilometers from Chepareria market.
West Pokot Deputy Traffic Police Commandant Damanian Mwandao said the lorry was transporting timber to Lodwar.
He pointed out that the driver of the lorry failed to manoeuvre the steering wheel after the breaks faltered.
Mwandau advised motorists plying the route to drive cautiously saying several accidents had occurred along that section of the road which has a very steep slope.
"We keep advising motorists plying the route to drive cautiously especially along this section since it is steep and it gets hard to manoeuvre with the steering wheel if breaks fail when in high speed," he said.
An eye witness, Isaac Muchiri, said the lorry begun swaying on the road before it lost control and landed in the valley.
The front part of the lorry was ripped off and wind screen shattered killing all the three people aboard.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kapenguria District Hospital Mortuary.
