Hey babe, can i get your number? Yes, No and Maybe. Women will answer this depending on who you are to them.

You may not know this but women are in perfect position to tell what kind of a man you will be to them as soon as they set their eyes on you. That’s just how it is. In this generation, when a woman outrightly gives you her number, it means two things.

She is either completely into you and her crush on you won’t just let her otherwise or, sadly, she wants to flaunt to her friends her latest catch who drives a range. A no is just a no. Whether you want friendship or a relationship, she is not in for it. Deal with it!

‘Maybe’ could be the most tricky one. This is a woman who may have felt something light up inside her when you talked to her but doesn’t want to let you know that she is easy. Be patient with her. She likes to be pursued. Go ahead and win her. Unfortunately though, it does not have to end in a win. If that is the case, get yourself together and brace yourself for the next prey.

What’s more important though? Getting to have the number of your crush/girl of your dreams or actually having her ‘inside your box’ (I wish I had a better phrase)? What’s better? To force her or stalk her until you have her number only to have your messages or calls not returned? Or to convince her, sit her down and have a captivating conversation?

Kenyan men are so big on getting a woman’s number. Whether they look for it from her friends or beg and follow her for months, they don’t seem to care.

The greatest worry is that they would not even answer why the need your number if you ask them. Yes I know; because you want to check on me from time to time which in reality is asking the type and color of undergarments I have. Or, wait! Because you want to engage me in long chats till the wee hours of the night like there is nothing else in the world to do. Or is it because you want to keep up with what goes on my WhatsApp?

Very nice…and that is supposed to make us feel wanted? Great!

Brothers, if you are going to break a sweat for a woman’s number, at least prove to her that you deserved it in the first place. At this point, I can almost hear men murmuring ‘women will always be nagging or play hard to get’.

Well, whatever you make of it, women like to see you working for it. It doesn’t matter how long or short it takes but you have to work for it. As a matter of fact, some men will get the number as soon as they meet the girl. The bottom line is the strategy you apply (I heard men are full of wits). But come to think of it, isn’t it you guys who think that a girl is too cheap when they give up their number as soon as you as for it? Why then would goofing around make her playing hard to get? You are just funny human beings.

One thing that strikes me even harder though is the speed with which a compliment changes into an abuse when a number is not given up. That if a woman is willing to play along by giggling at your dry jokes, standing at the side of the road to listen to how you have been seeing her around and give you her contact information, she remains the most beautiful thing you have ever seen in your entire life.

On the other hand, if for the first time you try to stop her she passes by you in a hurry, does not extend a hand in overdoing pleasantries then she suddenly becomes the ‘B’ who is the biggest, ugliest and fattest snob you have ever laid your eyes on. This is very common in the in the social media and women can bear me witness. A typical inbox thread goes like this:

Male: Hey beautiful, looking ‘sexy’ on your profile picture. You look familiar.

Female: *blushing* thanks. But I don’t think we have met.

Male: Can I have your number?

Female: eeeer! I am sorry, but I don’t give my number that easily. Maybe, I will with time.

Male: Nkt! You are not even pretty! Why are you such a snob? It is just a number! Let us wait and see if your ugly face will marry you! And what is wrong with her not willing to give her number?

There are a number of times when women have applied the exception to the rule for a handful of men they met. Seriously, when you are treated as the exception of the rule, why won’t you take the chance to stand out from the crowd? Should someone step in already to fill our men in on communication etiquette?

We understand that the economy is scaling up at a rather fast speed, but, for the woman you are pursuing for genuine reasons as you confess when you meet her, for a woman whose number you have worked for and earned; is the first thing you are going to do send her a ‘hy bbe ar u bzy’ text?

If this is the best you can put on the table, what can she expect on your first date? You’ve got to be kidding! Makes me curse the inception of unlimited messaging. There has to be more to that. Thank me later.
