Police Thursday shot dead two suspected thugs in a botched robbery and after a brief chase along Kangundo Road, Nairobi.

Police said they had already carjacked a salon car at KCC factory gate that was ferrying cash Sh2.4 m to a bank.

They recovered two pistols type ekol with three bullets while three other men escaped on motorbykes.

The men are also believed be part of a gang that has been terrorising petrol stations in eastlands Nairobi.

Head of special crimes prevention unit Noah Katumo said a hunt on the others in the 12 pm incident had been launched.

He said his officers were on patrol in the area when they were alerted the gang was there.

"This seems to have been an inside job that had been planned but we stopped the gang. The money is intact," said Katumo.

Cases of attacks on petrol stations in the area have been on the rise leaving five workers dead in a month.

He added preliminary findings had shown part of the gang had been involved in the attack on a petrol station in Embakasi area last month in which three workers were killed.

The bodies were taken to the mortuary.
