Kilifi, Kenya: Motorists and passengers plying Nairobi-Mombasa highway were Tuesday stranded for over 8 hours at the Mariakani weigh bridge in Kilifi County.
Truck drivers left their vehicles unattended on the road in protest over corruption claims at the facility.
The drivers allege that police officers selectively allow some trucks to pass without passing through the Weigh Bridge. The Kenya National Highways Authority which operates the Weigh Bridges does not have the authority to force trucks into being weighed.
With no alternative route, traffic snarl up extended to close to 20 kilometres on both sides of the town as no vehicle was able to leave or enter port town of Mombasa.
Consequently, millions of shillings have gone to waste following the day long inconvenience caused by the situation.
Kilifi County Governor Amason Kingi went into a crisis meeting with stakeholders on Tuesday afternoon to find means of solving the issue.
