There was shock in Gilgil when a married woman was caught in a compromising situation with a young man half her age.

The woman, who is in her mid 50s, was found in her house having sex with a 23-year-old quarry worker in Cokereria village in Karunga. Incidentally, it’s her 12-year-old son who found the duo in the act and informed neighbours.

The incensed neighbours locked the two in the house saying they would not allow them to leave until the husband, who works in Nairobi, arrived. They accused the woman of rampant promiscuity, saying  this was not the first time she had been nabbed in the act.

Administration Police officers from the nearby chief’s office had to intervene and save the two from the enraged crowd, which was baying for blood.

According to Jane Wambui, an eyewitness, the woman had called in her lover as soon as her son left for school. She said that was not the first time she had seen young men darting into the woman’s house in broad daylight

“This is not the first time she has been caught in such a situation. In fact, we caught her in the bushes with yet another young man a few weeks ago,” she said.

Wambui added that what made the situation so shameful and disgraceful was that this time, her son returned unexpectedly only to find his mother and a stranger in the act.

“The boy was so ashamed and hurt that he called neighbours. We decided to lock the two in the house until her poor husband, who works in Nairobi, arrived,” she explained.

The standoff was, however, cut-short by Administration Police officers who forcefully entered the house and took the two to the chief’s office.

As the two were been escorted away, the crowd jeered them. The man tried to hide his face using a sweater while the woman, who looked unperturbed, walked majestically without a care in the world.

A senior police officer who declined to be named said it would be tricky to charge the man, as there was no complainant and that in any case, while the law criminalises bigamy, it is silent on adultery.

As officers, we only move in to protect affected parties from physical harm,” said the officer.
