Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) will employ at least 45 doctors on postgraduate training at the facility in response to doctors’ strike in its fourth day today.

The move comes after the hospital recalled all its doctors and specialists on leave to fill the huge gap left by doctors on strike. They numbered twenty.

Officials of the largest referral facility in the country revealed the newly recruited doctors have been signed up on contract basis as the hospital struggles to weather the storm caused by striking doctors who downed their tools on Monday.

KNH’s Public Relations Officer Simon Ithae yesterday confirmed the newly contracted doctors had began reporting to work while the rest were expected by the end of this week.

The strike is currently affecting KNH and Mathare Mental Hospital.

“We decided to contact some of the specialists in our database to help us handle critical cases. including accidents and emergencies,” he said.

But Ithae admitted the hospital was feeling the pinch of the absence of trainee doctors who were officially called registrars. They are general doctors who are training to specialise in various fields of medicine.

KNH has about 400 registrars who offer a wide range of services.
