Kenya National Commission Human Rights Commissioner Hassan Omar Hassan has been awarded The Polish Prize of Sergio Vieira de Mello, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2002-2003).

Omar, a columnist with The Standard on Sunday, was bestowed the award for his outstanding merits in safeguarding human rights and human dignity, and for promoting peaceful cohabitation of people, religions and cultures in Kenya.

The award ceremony will take place on October 13, 2011 at the Villa Decius in Krakow, during "The Borderless People" conference.

Since 2004 the prize has been awarded annually to individuals and organisations from all over the world for their merits in promotion of human rights and humanitarian assistance.

Among those who have been feted are Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Prime Minister of Poland, and Fatos Lubonja, a writer-human rights activist from Albania, Nagy El-Khoury and Mohammad al-Nokkari, founders of Muslim-Christian Dialogue Centre in Lebanon and the United Nations Assistance Mission to Iraq.
