Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe says the police and prison officers should consider using martial arts instead of always using guns to deal with criminals.

He said martial arts would help them deal with suspects safely without having to use guns.

Kiraithe was speaking at a Malindi hotel during karate matches between the Kenya and Rwanda national teams. He also urged officers in the disciplined forces to employ martial arts when dealing with rioters instead of using guns.

Kiraithe said officers should turn to the use of guns as a last resort.

This comes in the wake of criticism that police officers use excessive and uncalled for force while dealing with suspects.

Kiraithe, who is also the chairman of the Karate club in the police force, described Karate as a very disciplined sport and that it can help the officers keep fit and disciplined.

He also challenged the youth to engage in sports like Karate to avoid engaging in vices like drug abuse and help them maintain self-discipline.
