Kenyans will witness the first exodus of slum dwellers to new modern houses in Kibera on Wednesday.
While addressing a rally in Kibera yesterday, Raila urged slum residents to move to the new houses, saying the Government would provide transport.
"I will be in front to lead the families to their new homes as this is what residents of the slums have yearned for," he said.
The move of approximately 400 families scheduled for September 16 will see the Kibera Soweto East residents relocate to the new homes.
He said once the first lot occupies the new houses, the Government would start building a modern market, school and hospital in the slum.
Raila warned those purporting to own land in the slum only had a temporary occupation license, as the land belonged to the Government.
He told Nubians the Government would allocate a communal title deed for the community.
"The Government has sent surveyors to demarcate land for the Nubian community away from the one reserved for slum upgrade programme," he said.
The PM also announced that the Government had set aside Sh1 billion for the construction of Phase II of the slum-upgrading project in Kibera.
Regulate rent
Said he: "We have spent Sh485 million on Phase 1 but we do not want the funds to be reverted to Treasury. Construction of Phase II should begin immediately."
Housing Minister Soita Shitanda, PS Tirop Kosgey and Roads Assistant Minister Lee Kinyanjui were present.
Meanwhile, the PM has been asked to form a taskforce to regulate rent matters in Nairobi.
Urban Tenants Association asked Raila to come to the aid of Kenyans living in urban areas, who have been "going through untold suffering by landlords haphazardly increasing rent."
