Hosts Maseno School dominated, winning two of four titles, at the end of the Nyanza provincial games.
They retained the basketball title for the eighth year running and bagged the rugby sevens crown. Boys’ hockey champions Kisumu Day and Lwak Girls retained the titles, while Raliew Girls retained the basketball title.
Maseno Schools humiliated Kisumu Boys 90-50 in basketball final that was marred with crowd trouble.
The absence of senior education officials and security personnel saw Kisumu Boys’ students cheering their team turn chaotic. They stormed the pitch at the end of the match and threatened to beat up their Maseno colleagues.
It took the intervention of Maseno School teachers to retrain their students from heating back after being attacked by the losers.
Kisumu Boys and their sworn enemies Kisumu Day showed a rear unity and cheered the former but they could not match Maseno, the former national champions.
Valentine Nyakinda, Christopher Kitimbwa and Samuel Odera of Maseno destroyed Kisumu by scoring points at will. Nyakinda netted 23 points to emerge top scorer while Salim Mzee of Kisumu scored 14 points.
Too good
Raliew Girls were too good for Kisumu, beating them 64-34 to retain the title Kisumu started the match well by holding the reigning champions but they ran out of steam in the last two quarters to give Raliew a leeway.
Meanwhile, national rugby champions Kakamega High School hammered Musingu Boys 21-7 in the finals of Western provincial secondary schools games.
In the playoff, Chavakali beat Mukumu 31-7 to emerge third. Kakamega beat Chavakali 5-3 while Musingu thrashed Mukumu 17-14 in the semis. Scorers for Kakamega in the final were Martin Kavale (tries) and Fabian Olando and Arnold Kipkorir-three conversions.
Football final
Scorers for Musingu were Glynn Okalo (try) and Ken Kinyua (conversion). Champions Friends School Kamusinga walloped Teremi Boys 3-0 to qualify for the semis. In other quarter-finals, Bungoma’s Kibabii floored Kapsowany from Mt Elgon 3-0, while Kolanya beat St Peter’s 3-1. Musingu defeated Chavakali 1-0.
Asumbi beat Migrori 1-0 in the men’s football final to book a ticket to the Kenya Teachers’ Training Colleges Sports Association national championships. They retained the Nyanza provincial title for the second year. Ronald Ruga netted the decider in the 75th minute at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, on Friday.
Asumbi hammered Kamagambo 4-0 in the semis, while Migori eliminated Msomi 3-1. In the women’s category, Asumbi silenced defending champions Migori 3-0 to lift the crown.
In handball, men, Kamagambo beat Migori 15-11 to book a ticket to the nationals slated for March 30 to April 1 at Thogoto in Nairobi.
In the men’s volleyball, Kamagambo bet Migori 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-11). In the women category Migori qualified to the nationals.
