Brazil’s all-time top scorer Neymar Jr. was reduced to tears after learning he had been named in Brazil’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, marking his long-awaited return to the national team after more than two years out.
The injury-hit forward drew the loudest reaction when coach Carlo Ancelotti unveiled the squad.
Neymar became emotional after Ancelotti confirmed his place in the team. He later shared the moment on Instagram, posting a video showing him in tears alongside Bruna Biancardi and close friends as the announcement was made.
“My vision of one of the most emotional and happiest days of my life is already there on the YouTube channel AND THANK YOU, BRAZIL,” he captioned.
His inclusion follows a difficult recovery from a torn ACL suffered in October 2023. Brazil’s record scorer, with 79 goals in 128 appearances, will now feature in what is set to be his fourth World Cup.
Ancelotti faced criticism for selecting Neymar ahead of attackers in better recent form, but defended his decision during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.
“He has improved his fitness,” Ancelotti was quoted by ESPN.
“He will be an important player in this World Cup. He has experience in this kind of competition, the love of our group, and he can create a better environment. We chose Neymar not because we think he will be a good substitute, but because we believe he can help the team, whether for one minute, five minutes, 90 minutes or even taking a penalty.”
While Neymar dominated headlines, the squad announcement also brought disappointment for Joao Pedro.
The 24-year-old forward, who scored 15 goals and provided five assists in the Premier League and contributed to 25 goals in all competitions, reacted to the omission on social media.
“I tried to give my best at all times. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to fulfill this dream of representing my country in a World Cup, but I remain calm and focused, as I always try to be. Joys and frustrations are part of football. From now on, I wish good luck to everyone who is there.”
