Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, in a tragedy that has stunned the NBA fraternity.

The news was confirmed on May 11, 2026, by the Memphis Grizzlies, the NBA, and his agency, Priority Sports.

Clarke was reportedly found dead on Monday, May 10, at a home in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.

According to LAPD sources cited by ABC News, investigators suspect a possible drug overdose after narcotics and drug paraphernalia were allegedly found at the scene.

Authorities said there were no signs of foul play, though an autopsy is still pending to establish the exact cause of death.

The tragedy comes weeks after Clarke was arrested in Arkansas in early April 2026 for speeding and possession of a controlled substance identified as kratom, an herbal supplement commonly used for pain relief.

Although kratom remains legal in some US states, it is banned in Tennessee. Clarke was later released on bond the following day.

The 29-year-old was selected 21st overall by the Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA Draft after a standout college career at Gonzaga University.

Known for his athleticism, rebounding ability, and defensive presence, Clarke quickly became a vital player off Memphis’ bench. He averaged more than 12 points per game during the Grizzlies’ impressive 2022 Western Conference semifinals run.

However, injuries disrupted the latter stages of his career, including a major Achilles tear in 2023 that limited him to just two appearances during the 2025-26 season.

Despite the setbacks, Clarke remained widely respected for his resilience and professionalism.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver described him as a “cherished teammate and leader who approached the game with immense pride.”

In a statement, the Memphis Grizzlies said: “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke. He was an outstanding teammate and an even better person.”

Tributes also poured in from teammates, rivals, and fans online, with many remembering Clarke as “the gentlest soul” whose impact extended far beyond basketball.

“He was so loved by all of us here, and everyone whose life he touched,” Priority Sports said in its tribute.

Clarke leaves behind a legacy defined by perseverance, humility, and his uplifting presence both on and off the court.
