Kenya pays Sh3.9bn AFCON fee to secure 2027 hosting bid

The Government has moved to quell concerns over its readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), after remitting Sh3.9 billion ($30 million) hosting fee to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya, and signals renewed commitment to the “Pamoja” bid, which had recently faced scrutiny following a leaked CAF inspection report.

The payment settles a key financial obligation to CAF and is expected to ease pressure over Kenya’s preparedness.

“There is no longer any room for doubt,” Mvurya said. “By remitting the USD 30 million hosting fee, the Government has fulfilled its primary financial obligation to CAF.”

He added that the payment reflects Kenya’s commitment to delivering a successful continental tournament.

The Ministry also announced the restructuring of the Multi-Agency Local Organising Committee (LOC), in a bid to address administrative bottlenecks that have slowed progress in the past.

Officials said the new structure is aimed at improving coordination across sectors, including security, transport and infrastructure, to meet CAF requirements.

With the hosting fee paid, attention now shifts to infrastructure upgrades and compliance with CAF standards ahead of the final inspection.

Key projects include improvements to stadium lighting to meet broadcast standards, and the completion of facilities at Nyayo Stadium, Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police SACCO Stadium.

A regional meeting is also scheduled for next month to address logistical issues such as visa facilitation and tax exemptions for participating teams and fans.

The final CAF inspection is set for August 2026 and will determine Kenya’s readiness to host the tournament.

Mvurya said the Government remains confident that the country is on track.

“AFCON 2027 will be a catalyst for economic growth and international prestige,” he said. “The funds are cleared, the structures are in place, and Kenya is ready to play its part.”
