Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan Abdi has joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), in a move that could reshape political alignments in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Yusuf was formally received into the party by Gachagua at the DCP headquarters on Tuesday, where he was presented with a DCP cap and publicly welcomed by supporters and party officials.
The move places the veteran lawmaker in Gachagua’s growing political camp as the former Deputy President seeks to consolidate support and build a national political network ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
“We are now in DCP, and we have decided to support Rigathi Gachagua in his 2027 presidential ambitions,” Yusuf stated.

Yusuf’s decision is significant given his long-standing presence in Kamukunji politics and his extensive parliamentary experience.
He was first elected to Parliament in 2007 and retained the Kamukunji seat in the 2013 General Election on a The National Alliance (TNA) ticket.
In the August 8, 2017 election, he successfully defended the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, securing 54 per cent of the total votes cast.
Yusuf was re-elected for a fourth term in the 2022 General Election, further cementing his political influence in the constituency. He garnered 34,264 votes, defeating his closest challenger, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Robow Hassan, who received 22,644 votes.
His political journey has also been marked by extensive parliamentary experience. Yusuf has consistently served on the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations across the 10th, 11th and 12th Parliaments, giving him significant exposure to matters of national security, foreign policy and international relations.
He has also served on several other influential parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Appointments, the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee, the Committee on Delegated Legislation, and the Budget and Appropriations Committee.
His move to DCP comes as Kenya’s political landscape begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 polls, with political parties and prominent leaders positioning themselves and seeking to expand their bases beyond traditional strongholds.
