Deputy President Kithure Kindiki joined a host of veteran politicians, former and sitting top state officials, at a memorial mass held in honour of Kiraitu Murungi’s late daughter, Anita Kendi Kiraitu.
The service brought together senior political figures from across the political divide, who converged to console the former minister during what was described as one of the most painful moments for any parent.
The gathering stood out for the presence of both serving and former leaders, underscoring a rare moment of unity in grief.
Among those in attendance were former Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, former Governor Francis Kimemia, former Senator Ephraim Maina, former Chief Justice David Maraga and Senator Amos Wako, among others.
Deputy President Kindiki, who is the sitting second-in-command, joined mourners in offering condolences to the family, with tributes highlighting the emotional toll of the loss and calling for strength and comfort for the bereaved.
In his official Facebook statement, Kindiki condoled with the former minister.
"May God comfort them. As we reflect on the loss for this and other grieving families around our country, I plead that we all work together regardless of political or other differences to protect the peace, stability and security of our homeland," he wrote.
Messages of sympathy also continued to pour in online.
Wanjiru Mbugua Njui wrote, “Rest in perfect peace beautiful,” while Mercy Waithaka Mbuki posted, “May God give his family strength. Thanks our DP Kithure Kindiki.”
Monica Muriungi added, “Hii inauma sana, God give the family strength.”
Anita Kendi Kiraitu died on May 14, 2026, after a short illness, prompting an outpouring of grief from leaders, friends and supporters.
Kiraitu Murungi is one of Kenya’s longest-serving politicians and legal minds, having served in several influential positions in government over the years.
He previously served as Meru Governor, Senator for Meru, Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs and as a long-serving Member of Parliament for South Imenti.
Known for his role in Kenya’s constitutional and governance reforms, Kiraitu has remained an influential political figure in the Mount Kenya region and national politics for decades.
His requiem mass drew political veterans and senior leaders from different generations, perhaps a stark display of the respect and networks he has built throughout his public career.
