Speaker Amason Kingi mourns long-serving bodyguard John Lumumba in heartfelt post

Kilifi County Speaker Amason Kingi is mourning the untimely death of his devoted bodyguard, Corporal John Lwane Lumumba.

In a heartfelt social media post, Kingi expressed profound grief, recalling that their last interaction was a light-hearted conversation just moments before the tragedy.

“Gone too soon, my young brother. The cruel hand of death has snatched you so fast,” he wrote, describing Lumumba as family and praising his gallantry, discipline, and unwavering loyalty.

Lumumba, a decorated officer in the General Service Unit (GSU), was mourned widely on social media by Kingi's followers.

Gone too soon my young brother. The cruel hand of death has snatched you so fast. One minute we are having a walk and chatting jovially and the next minute I’m called to be informed that you are no more.
To me you were not just a bodyguard, you were family. I admired the way you… pic.twitter.com/Um7mcUupOi

Social media quickly became a hub for condolences.

X user @didamolale wrote, “Pole…receive my heartfelt condolences,” while @OkachKevin1 added, “So unfortunate. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Kingi remembered Lumumba’s critical role in ensuring his safety during turbulent political periods, calling him irreplaceable.

“He was always reliable, professional, and warm, often lightening tense moments with humour,” Kingi said.

Lumumba’s death leaves a void not only in Kingi’s security detail but also in his personal circle.

Tragically, this is not the first time Kingi has experienced the loss of a close security officer.

In October 2012, his bodyguard, Harrison Maitha, died shielding him during post-election violence in Kilifi.

Maitha’s heroism was widely lauded, and suspects were brought to justice years later. Another officer was killed in 2020, leading to convictions.

Colleagues and fellow leaders have paid tribute, with Kilifi County officials and Senate peers highlighting Lumumba’s dedication and service to the nation.

Kingi has urged Kenyans to support Lumumba’s family, promising assistance.
