Oloolua Forest has received a boost in its restoration efforts after 2,000 indigenous trees were planted at Turaco Camp on Saturday, October 10, ahead of Mazingira Day.
The exercise brought together students, young people, environmental enthusiasts and conservation advocates to plant trees and learn about environmental protection.
The planting was organised by Green Generation Initiative (GGI) under its Conservation Is Fun programme, which combines environmental restoration with outdoor activities to encourage public participation in conservation.
Participants also took part in guided nature walks, interactive games, music, dance and performances during the event.
The exercise comes as Kenya pursues its target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, with the broader aim of increasing national tree cover to 30 per cent and restoring degraded landscapes.
However, the long-term impact of tree-planting exercises depends on whether seedlings survive and mature. Proper planting techniques, the selection of suitable species and consistent aftercare are essential to ensuring the trees contribute to forest restoration.

GGI founder and chief executive Elizabeth Wathuti said the organisation would continue organising conservation activities across the country, with an emphasis on getting more people, particularly young people, involved.
“Our responsibility continues after the event, because the trees we plant need care to survive and grow,” she said.
The initiative seeks to encourage participants to maintain their involvement in environmental protection beyond organised events and extend conservation efforts to their own communities.
Participants were urged to continue planting and caring for trees while protecting ecosystems in their respective communities.
Mazingira Day, marked annually on October 10, promotes environmental awareness and public participation in conservation. This year’s tree-planting exercise took place on the eve of the Sunday, October 11.
Founded in 2016, GGI works with communities on ecosystem restoration, environmental education, climate resilience and green initiatives in schools
