The family of former Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli is in mourning following the death of his mother, Suzana Magufuli, after a prolonged illness.
Family members said Suzana died at her home in Chato District in Tanzania’s Geita Region on the evening of Monday, May 25.
Her death was confirmed by Magufuli’s daughter, Jessica Magufuli, during an interview with local digital outlet Ayo TV, before she later shared an emotional tribute on social media.
Jessica described her grandmother as a woman of wisdom, faith and guidance whose life and teachings touched many people within and beyond the family.
“Siku ya leo, siku ya Jumanne tarehe 25 May, kwa majonzi makubwa na simanzi iliyotanda mioyoni mwetu tunasikitika kuwajulisha ndugu, jamaa na marafiki na Watanzania wote kwa ujumla kuwa aliyekuwa mama mzazi wa Rais wetu mpendwa Hayati Dkt John Pombe Magufuli amefariki dunia,” she said.
The passing of Suzana Magufuli has revived memories of the legacy left by her son, who served as Tanzania’s president from November 2015 until his sudden death in March 2021.
Since news of her death emerged, many Tanzanians have continued to send messages of condolence to the family, reflecting on the influence the Magufuli family held during his presidency.
Among the seven children of the late president, Jessica appears to be the only one actively involved in politics, having been nominated as a special seats Member of Parliament.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan also joined citizens in mourning with the bereaved family, sending a condolence message and prayers during the difficult period.
“Kwa niaba ya serikali na kwa niaba yangu binafsi naungana na familia katika kipindi hiki kigumu cha majonzi, tukiwaombea nguvu, faraja na uvumilivu,” part of the statement read.
