A businessman accused of defrauding two individuals of more than Sh2.2 million by falsely promising to secure National Police Service recruitment slots collapsed in court before he could take plea.
George Makokha Onyango appeared before Principal Magistrate Renee Kitagwa visibly distressed, walking into the dock with his head bowed before suddenly losing balance and falling to the floor moments later.
His lawyer, Advocate Ongaro, told the court that Onyango was in severe pain after allegedly being assaulted on the head while in police custody. She urged the court to defer the plea taking to allow him to receive urgent medical treatment.
The magistrate directed that the accused be taken to hospital for immediate medical attention before any plea could be entered. The case will be mentioned again in one week.
According to investigators, Onyango allegedly preyed on desperate job seekers by posing as a well-connected intermediary capable of influencing the National Police Service recruitment process.
In one of the incidents, Onyango is accused of obtaining Sh1 million from Justus Kiprono Lagat on December 5, 2025, at Donholm in Embakasi South, Nairobi, after promising to secure two recruitment slots for Lagat’s relatives.
Investigators say Onyango overheard Lagat discussing difficulties surrounding the recruitment exercise with a friend before approaching him and claiming he could facilitate the appointments. Despite reservations about making cash payments, Lagat reportedly transferred the money through mobile money services at the accused’s insistence.
