The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested Bare Sahara Ahmed following controversial remarks in a viral video.
In a statement posted on its social media platforms, the DCI said her sentiments were deemed inciteful and likely to undermine national cohesion.
“The arrest follows a swift and thorough review of the video, alongside ongoing investigations to establish the full context and intent of the statements made,” the post stated in part.
The agency said Ahmed is in lawful custody and is being processed pending arraignment in court.
The statement concluded with a warning to the public on the use of free speech.
“The DCI wishes to remind members of the public that freedom of expression, as enshrined in the Constitution, must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.
Utterances that may incite division, hatred, or threaten peaceful coexistence will be dealt with firmly and without exception.
Members of the public are urged to remain calm, maintain peace, and refrain from sharing inflammatory content that may escalate tensions,” the post added.
In the viral video, Ahmed addressed DCI director Mohammed Amin in her native language.
Kenyans on social media shared mixed reactions to the arrest.
On Facebook, Hon Abdimajid Hussein wrote, “We commend the DCI for their swift and decisive action in arresting her. This sends a clear and strong message that any individual who seeks to incite Kenyans against one another will not be tolerated. Incitement threatens the peace, stability, and unity that our nation has worked hard to build, and those responsible must face the full force of the law without fear or favor.”
User Emma Che added, “She made statements that will last in people's minds for years. Nothing as bad as describing someone by looks.”
