Kenya AIDS NGOS Consortium (KANCO) has praised the Government for releasing Sh286 million for procurement of TB drugs.

The funds, according to the consortium, will not be devolved and will help address cases of dwindling stock of drugs meant to address cases of resistant TB.

KANCO Executive Director Allan Ragi said the Government's senior chief finance officer had written to the director of medical services over the drugs.

"The country is now in the process of ensuring the procurement commences immediately and fast track all the deliveries to ensure they are done by February or March 2015," he said. The consortium had earlier warned that the country was facing a looming shortage of drugs to deal with the drug resistant TB putting the lives of hundreds of Kenyans in danger.

This had forced the Ministry of hHealth to borrow drugs from Malawi to treat cases of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. KANCO Senior TB advocacy manager Evaline Kibuchi said the Government borrowed drugs from Malawi as a stop gap measure to address the shortage.
