Daddy Owen (L), Rufftone (R)

Gospel singer Smith Mwatia, alias Rufftone has for the first time opened up about a past almost fatal fall out with his brother Owen Mwatia popularly known as Daddy Owen. According to Rufftone, politics almost got him killed by his own brother.

Describing vividly the events of a fateful day back in 2007, Rufftone recalled how his brother charged at him with a machete after disagreeing over politics.

“In 2007 I remember very boldly my blood brother Daddy Owen was for ODM and I was for PNU and when we disagreed in the morning,” he said.

According to him, Daddy Owen regrouped with a number of his friends after the argument and started looking for him, targeting him with machetes.

“Daddy Owen had to run out to the streets with his friends, na mapanga targeting me,” he added.

Rufftone, who is a Nairobi senatorial aspirant in the upcoming general election, disclosed that this 2007 incident played a major role in his decision to join politics through a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

Born and raised in Eastlands, Rufftone added that he believes that politics is about ideologies and if people differ, they do not have to engage in fistfights. He is a believer in agreeing to disagree as far as politics is concerned.

“There is a movement of hooliganism…I’m born in this country and I’ve been in Eastlands. I tend to think politics is about ideologies, and if we differ politically, you don’t have to manifest it by harming me verbally or physically,” he said.

Rufftone announced his entry into the Nairobi senatorial race in November last year and he joins a number of musicians and entertainers who want to try their luck in politics.
