Neno Evangelism Ministries founder Pastor James Ng'ang'a is breathing fire and brimstone over proposals being floated around that the church in Kenya needs to be regulated.
Through a long video shared on social media, Nga’ng’a is particularly offended by calls to lock out illiterate preachers over claims they are taking advantage of the flock.
Nga’ng’a did not mince his words as he rebuked an anchor for suggesting the idea explaining that churchgoers do not need degrees to know God.
“Mtazamaji katika televisheni yako karibu sana. Ni daktari hapa Kenya One. Daktari ambaye hajui kusoma wala kuandika. Na leo nilisema nitazungumza tu kiasi kwa yale ambayo nimeona yakipitapita kwenye mitandao.
“Kwanza nashukuru wale ambao hawajui kusoma kwa sababu mbinguni hatuendi na masomo. Hakuna degree itapima milango ya mbinguni na vile vile niwapongeze wale mumesoma –you are doing good- mumefanya vizuri.
“Lakini ile katiba wanasema ati wale wahubiri hawana degree wakatazwe kuhubiri kama Rwanda, this is Kenya not Rwanda, na wewe news anchor unongea hivyo kwa nini? Ndugu zako wote wamesoma? Kwenu Murang’a watu wamesoma ama Tanzania? You can’t talk like that,” said Nga’ng’a.
He revealed that he personally does not know how to read and write but his ministry was healing even those with postgraduate doctoral degrees (PhDs).
“Mimi sijui kusoma na mimi ndiye mwanzilishi wa hili kanisa. Na watu hawahitaji kusoma ndo wajue mungu. Wanahitaji kuamini. Ishara zitafuatana na wale waaminio.
“Nimeombea daktari leo –daktari wa 26 years - na amelala kama mtoto mdogo after kukaa miaka yote hio. Nimeombea nurse ana PhD na emejidunga sindano ya diabetes for 20 years. Funga mdomo wako. Kama hujawahi kujua,” he added.
Pastor Nga’ng’a reiterated that illiterate individuals should not be trampled on and insisted that attempts to block illiterate preachers will not succeed.
“Wewe ukitaka kudeal na mtu yeyote, deal na yule Bishop mumekosana lakini ukisema wahubiri tunaiba. Tunaiba umekuja kanisa yangu mara ngapi? Ndio sijui kusoma kwani watu wote Kenya wanajua kusoma? How? Wale wamesoma wanatuambia nini sisi wale hatujasoma? Tutajuaje? Mtu ambaye hajajua kunguni, chawa.
“Hamuwezi kutublock. Bunge mumeenda nyinyi, makazi makubwa mumeenda nyinyi, ma ministers ni nyinyi, whatever ni nyinyi. Sisi watu hatukusoma tubaki na kuosha barabara? That cannot happen.
“Please separate preaching na hiyo kazi ya news anchor. Nakuambia tu kijana separate,” warned the pastor.
Calls across the country that the church needs to be regulated has been gaining steam, propelled by rising cases of worshippers being conned via mushrooming churches.
A move opposed by most church leaders who propose that they can only self-regulate.
