Mwihila High was established in 1950 as a primary school by Church of God missionaries before it was transformed into a teachers' training college.
The first group of students left and started Emwiru Primary school and Emulole Primary respectively in 1955 and five years later Mwihila mixed secondary school opened its doors to five pioneer students: George Amunga-retired Provincial Director of Education, Prof Rebecca Eshiwani-lecturer, Kenyatta University, Rev. Florida Oyiengo, Florence Khasakhala and a Mr Mung'aya- retired District Education Officer with a Mr Yutzy as the first Principal.
The school was converted to a boys' school to offer A-level in 1970 with Kefa Yaya as the first black Principal.
The current principal is Musonye Namusende. Mwihila has a strong alumni team led by a President, his deputy and treasurer elected by members from its four member regions of Nairobi, Western, Coast and Diaspora with each headed by a coordinator.
The current President is Francis Limera Omukolo deputised by Gregory Oluoch and Wycliffe Andako as treasurer.

Notable alumni guided by the motto "Success is Our Pride" include; Justice Aggrey Muchelule, a High Court Judge, the late George Eshiwani, former VC Kenyatta University, Ben Jipcho-Olympic gold medalist, Hon. Wycliffe Osundwa, former Mumias East MP, Prof Stanley Ominde Khainga-an eminent plastic surgeon at Kenyatta National Hospital, Prof Fanson Majani Kidwaro, chair of the Department of Agriculture at the University of Central Missouri in Columbia and Prof Onesmus Ayaya, a doctor in South Africa.
Others who rode the "Nyangumi" school bus to their sister school, Bunyore girls besides enjoying githeri with "weevels" for lunch and ugali with kunde for supper served by Papa Lefty and Mourinho the cooks are Bruce Mackenzie-an actor in Makutano Junction and Vincent Okeni Ongeti-chief consultant officer; Jubilee Insurance.
Those who wore grey trouser with white shirt and navy blue sleeveless sweater before changing shirts to sky blue and retiring to Ayuku, Oxford, Shikuku, Khatele, Shipiri, Abwogi and Jipcho dormitories are Bruce Amani, a reporter with Deutche Wella , Rev. Mike Sande, a former Bishop of ACK Butere Diocese, Arthur Apwoka-University of Rwanda, Joseph Mukobe, lecturer at JKUAT, engineer Salim Simiyu of KETRACO, Peter Ambeye, former Director at Kenya Metereological Department), Paul Onduso- Senior Counsel in the High Court, Major Fredrick Sifuna of KDF, Ellis Ominde, director, Marell Academy Bungoma, Dr Francis Likoye, lecturer and researcher, Dr Alfred Were of Matungu sub-county hospital and Prof Ayuku, a language lecturer at Moi University.
