The Nairobi County Government has announced that Uhuru Park is closed for renovation.

Through a notice published in the local dailies on Wednesday, the capital county mentioned that the park is scheduled to undergo maintenance in a bid to improve its utility to the visitors who frequent it.

“Consequently, the facility has been closed down to the public for any gatherings and meetings with effect from January 23, 2018 until further notice.” The notice reads in part.

The move by the county has elicited mixed reactions from netizens with some making fun of the move as an attempt to thwart NASA’s planned swearing ceremony that was to take place at the grounds on 30th January.

Here are some of the trending reactions:

If you want anything of yours renovated just say it is a swearing venue, they'll sort you like Uhuru park pic.twitter.com/H4MnAiF52U — Raila Junior Odinga (@Railajunior) January 24, 2018

Maybe Raila should say he will be sworn in at Kenyatta Hospital, that way it will be renovated.

So what renovation is going on at Uhuru Park that they have to close it? Are they painting the grass or what? — Mutembei (@MutembeiRintari) January 24, 2018

Before Sonko became the governor of Nairobi County he had plans to make UHURU PARK a bus stop/parking.

Does the closure of Uhuru Park mean he wants to implement the plan? — Javin Omukangala???????? (@amwesther) January 25, 2018
