Famous Kalenjin secular musician Milka Jeptoo (pictured) also known as ‘Yondo Sister’ has the seen the light. She has switched to gospel.
“I am now saved, and I am now jigging to God for the good reasons, I am done with the secular music and I will never go back. I am a born again evangelist,” Jeptoo told The Nairobian.
She reveled her new stage name is ‘Ex-Yondo Sister.’
“This is the only way my friends and fans knew I changed for the better, I remain an Ex-Yondo for now,” Jeptoo says.
Jeptoo rose to fame in 2005 when she joined hands with other famous Kalenjin secular artistes like Mika Maritim, Kimaya Jazz, Kimengeng, Kerio Stars and Kapchumbe sisters, a famous group which graced famous Kalenjin and other social events.
She was famous for the song, Cheplemindet (meaning a Luo woman). The song praised the seduction and cooking prowess of a Luo woman.
The 45-year-old mother of four attests that her transition is as a shocker to her fans.
“We ruled the Kalenjin secular music group. Life was a roller-coaster since I was a producer too.
We were the most-sought after groups to perform in events and even entertain fans abroad,” Jeptoo says.
In 2012, however, Jeptoo says she felt the urge to leave the secular world and got saved.
“I always felt there was something missing in my life, even with all the fame, I felt low and could not even perform in functions even when requested to.
That is the time I felt I needed God the most,” she says.
One Sunday in 2012, Jeptoo says she walked to a church in Nakuru where she also works and lives.
“And that is how everything revolved and that was when an evangelist in me was born,” she says.
However, the transition has not been easy since she has lost most of her close friends after she quit clubbing and partying.
Her focus is now on her spiritual journey.
“Many of my friends and fans thought I was pulling a stunt and could sometimes call me for a drink, however I always explained to them that I changed and did not regret it,” Jeptoo says.
She attributes her success to both her spiritual friends who have mentored her.
Having been in the music industry before, the songbird decided to use her talent in singing gospel and inspirational music.
One of her songs, Ogilegei narrates about her struggle in her spiritual journey despite many tribulations that she comes across.
“Change is a radical journey and we must always remind ourselves and also pray to overcome the many temptations.
One loses friends but we should try as much to be the examples,” she says.
She has produced one album with love, praise and unity as main messages in her gospel songs.
