What is LinkedIn? Simply LinkedIn is a professional social networking site launched in 2003 and since its launch it has recorded over 450 million users worldwide. Unlike other social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, snapchat, and Flickr this site is purely professional hence it goes beyond saying that you shouldn’t post that which is unprofessional. It’s unfortunate that a large number of students haven’t realized the need to build networks while they are still proceeding with their studies. 

Why use LinkedIn? First of all, you need network that suits your industry, it’s not enough to have lots of friends from your class or your campus you need a network of people within your career interests, how can you easily build one, the answer is; create a LinkedIn account, update your profile and keep it professional, that is anything that pertains to your professional qualifications, work experience and specific hard skills be up to date. Then search and create connections with your colleagues these could be your classmates or just simply friends and people in your industry, these are the same people to endorse you in specific fields of your specialization.

Industry groups can offer you value and connection. Groups create a platform where participants share and exchange ideas on professional issues and practically offers you a chance as an expertise in the given field to contribute and comment on issues that are being discussed. Also groups offer a forum for questions where you can ask questions and have them answered, typically it’s like a brainstorming session. In other word LinkedIn is an online expanded resume where you can typically place anything that won’t fit in a normal resume. It comes in handy when updating your CV since sometimes it proves a daunting task when you need to correctly input start and end dates in case the CV has to be presented within a short notice, hence the need to have correct details in your profile. In case you are applying for that job, just share your profile with the recruiter.

You can also publish your knowledge. It allows individuals share posts that help them showcase their knowledge on a certain field; this can help you legitimize yourself as an expert in that field.
