Leah Wanjiru Kanene
  • Leah Wanjiru Kanene is accused of planning her own kidnapping
  • Kanene told her sister that she had been abducted by unknown people asking for Sh500,000 ransom
  • It is alleged she was staying in a lodging with another man the whole time

A married primary school teacher in Nairobi who allegedly kidnapped herself and asked for Sh500,000 ransom from her family was with another man in Mombasa.

Leah Wanjiru Kanene (pictured) was arrested on July 31 after a police search following her disappearance.

In the affidavit sworn before court, Wanjiru allegedly gave false information to her sister Julia Njambi on July 18 that she had been abducted by unknown people.

Njambi reported the matter at Buruburu Police Station.

Police said the accused planned her own kidnapping, leaving behind her young children with the husband.

It is alleged she was staying in a lodging with another man.

A few days later, the court heard, she called her family and friends asking for Sh500,000 ransom “or else her kidnappers would kill her.”

Her family raised more than Sh70,000 which was sent to her ‘abductors’ but was later withdrawn by Wanjiru who was arrested after police received information she had returned to her home.

Wanjiru asked the court to release her on a cash bail as she has a small sick child. She was released on a cash bail of Sh20,000.
