Sonko announces nominee to replace Ouko in Education docket

Three days after Nairobi Education minister Janet Ouko quit, Governor Mike Sonko has nominated her replacement.

If approved, Ouko will be replaced by Lucia Mulwa to be in charge of the Education, Youth, Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services.

Sonko accused Ouko of complicity in misappropriation of millions of funds meant for bursaries.

Ouko quit citing frustration and intimidation.

Sources said Ouko resigned due to a difficult working relationship with her boss.

Former Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe also described Sonko as difficult to work with.

But Sonko said the CEC resigned when she could not account for the funds when probed.

Sonko added that investigations are underway and those found culpable will be held to account.

Speaking in Kilifi on Friday, the Governor named the new Cabinet executives.

Most of the CECs were hired on one-year contracts. Some contracts were not renewed.

The new executive nominees include Sanjeev Kaur, who will head the Environment docket.

Finance and Economic Planning will now be headed by Winfred Gathagu.

Pauline Kahiga will head the Public Service Management and Devolution docket as Stella Bosire takes charge of Health.

Sonko retained five CECs, who include Charles Kerich (Lands), Mohamed Dagane (Roads), Allan Igambi (Trade), Larry Wambua (Agriculture) and ICT's Newton Munene.

He cautioned county officlals against embezzlement.

"If you know you are only interested in siphoning money, do not take the job," Sonko said.
