The first sex doll brothel in France has been given the go ahead by police despite claims it breaches legislation banning prostitution.

Protesters had called for the brothel, which opened in Paris in January, to be made illegal.

Communist members of the Paris Council called for its closure on moral grounds, while feminist groups argue that it encourages a culture of rape.

But after a thorough police inspection, XDolls, which charges €89 for an hour with a sex doll, was approved.

Deputy Mayor Bruno Julliard, a Socialist, dismissed the motion as a waste of council time, saying it was “far removed from town hall business”, The Times reported.

He was backed by a source at the interior ministry who said that the brothel had been inspected by police last week.

“They checked to see if it caused public disorder and on the face of it, that is not the case. Everything is in order. There are no complaints from neighbours yet.”

Joaquim Lousquy, the owner of the business, which is officially registered as a games centre, said: “The police officer was very nice. He looked at everything.”

Punters are offered the services of a sex doll rather than a real woman in one of the several rooms inside the brothel.

A look inside the sex club shows there are four different dolls.

They come in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes and are all dressed in skimpy lingerie.

Lorraine Questiaux, a spokeswoman for the Nid movement, an anti-prostitution campaign group, told The Times the sex doll brothel would encourage “a culture of rape”.

“The police have a duty to ensure the respect of peace, salubrity and human dignity.

“And on this last point, can we accept in France a trade based upon the promotion of rape?”

The UK's first sex doll brothel opened its doors in Gateshead.

"You used to play with dolls as a child. These sex dolls are dolls. Maybe people just like that kind of thing."

And a pop-up sex doll brothel has also opened its doors in Amsterdam - and was even funded by tax payers.

The unusual brothel in Amsterdam was opened by the presenters of 'Spuiten en Slikken' - roughly translated as Shoot and Swallow - which is a controversial show about drugs and sex on Dutch public television.

According to spokesman Thijs Verheij, the show tries to find out if the world is ready to have sex with a doll and to compare if it feels similar to having sex with a real human being.

Mr Verheij said: "Scientists state that in 30 years it will be very normal to have sex with a robot.

"With this experiment we want to run ahead of this and investigate how people see it now."

The brothel used four silicone women selected by sex doll import business Mytenga.

Mytenga founder Niels van der Voort said: "You have hollow breasts, which are softer as there is air inside.

"And you have massive breasts which are more heavy, so customers can choose."

TV Presenter Gwen van Poorten said a sex doll brothel could also help to combat crime.

She said: "Think about illegal prostitution, or human trafficking.

"I wouldn't say this would be a solution for it, but in the future, if we can have sex with dolls, alongside prostitutes, it gives an option extra which I think is awesome."
