Everyone is blaming someone for the riots that have rocked schools across the country. While students have widely been blamed for destroying property in their institutions, Education CS Fred Matiang’i is accusing school managers of failing to forestall burning of dormitories.
However, it is important to note that all stakeholders have a role to ensure learning is not interrupted. Police must investigate, arrest and charge culprits in court. On the other hand, the minister must ensure sound policies to ensure our education system meets the needs of both the learners and the job market.
We must also ensure that local politics do not interfere with management of our schools. We have had cases where local politicians have influenced who becomes the principal of a school irrespective of the performances. This must stop.
In some cases, school officials have been accused of engineering the fires to destroy documents after squandering funds.
