Six people were arrested for flouting the newly gazetted regulations on packaging and marketing potatoes. The regulations require traders and farmers to package potato produce in 50kg bags instead of 110kg.
They were arrested at Engineer trading centre transporting 131 bags.
“Farmers alerted us that the three had been purchasing produce in extended bags contrary to the law,” says Agatha Thuo, Nyandarua Executive officer in charge of agriculture.
The move will see farmers save millions of shillings that they lost to the middlemen who buy the produce in extended bags only to convert it to 110 kilogram bags.
