Nyeri; Kenya: Authorities at Consolata Hospital in Nyeri are appealing for aid to help 10-month-old Brian Gitau, abandoned by his mother at birth, to travel to India for surgery.
The toddler was born with a cleft lip and herniated brain and has to depend on nasal gastric methods to feed.
Brian requires up to Sh5 million to have the surgery that will give him a normal childhood.
"A section of his brain is exposed thus making him very susceptible to infection. He also cannot be able to stand without losing balance," said Wilson Wachiuri, a physician at the hospital.
The toddler's mother abandoned him shortly after delivery at Kanunga Health Centre when she realised that he was deformed.

"The baby has been under the care of the hospital ever since," Dr Wachiuri said, adding that plans are already underway to transport the boy to India where they have identified a hospital that can carry out the surgeries required.
