Mbugua wants Nyumba Kumi initiative embraced

Nakuru, Kenya: Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has called on residents to embrace the Nyumba Kumi initiative to improve security in the county.

Mr Mbugua said to ensure effective implementation of the initiative, landlords should establish estate associations that will see all plot owners and tenants registered.

Speaking during a tour of development projects in Free Area Township within Nakuru Town East constituency, Mbugua said formation of the associations would provide an opportunity for people living within a locality to know each other.

“Associations will provide a plat form for screening those who enter and leave estates all the time to prevent incidences of insecurity,” said Mbugua.

He called on landlords to register and vet tenants who occupy their houses including what they practice for a living for security purposes.

“Lack of information of tenants by landlords endangers security because, the tenants may be linking with terrorists or criminals without anyone’s knowledge,” he said.

On terrorism, the governor told members of the public that they have an obligation to give information of individuals they suspect to have links with terrorists to security officers on time.

He pointed out that Nakuru is a cosmopolitan town that has attracted both locals from different regions of the country including foreigners that require a keen collaboration between residents and security personnel to prevent any incident of terror attack.

On his part, Nakuru County Commissioner Mohamed Birik said security agencies have been tasked to vet all aliens in the county to avoid incidences of insecurity.

Mr Birik said the security agencies will vet all identification documents of foreigners and arrest those living in the country illegally.
