Everton new signing Wayne to make Tanzania trip.
Wayne Rooney has confirmed that he will travel to Tanzania as Everton prepares to face Kenyan giants Gor Mahia in Dar es Salaam on Thursday.
An official Everton tweeter handle, @Everton, said: “Rooney says #EFC’s trip to Tanzania provides the perfect opportunity for him to get to know his new teammates.”
The Manchester United great, who switched allegiance to his boyhood club, Everton, at the weekend, addressed the media for the first in Toffees colours yesterday and wasted no time in saying how he was itching to face Mighty Gor Mahia.
“I’m looking forward to it - it should be a good trip,” he told evertontv.
“It’s good when you go away with the team. It’s good to be around the hotel with the players, spend more time with them and get to know them more.
“I’ve never been to Tanzania before, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
Rooney, 31, began his illustrious football career at Everton aged nine and made his English Premier League debut in 2002 under David Moyes.
And what a start. Five days before turning 17, Rooney, known to his fans as Wazza, scored his first Premier League goal - a strike that left TV commentator Clive Tyldesley scrambling for superlatives.
Rooney brought down the ball from the air, swivelled almost 36o degrees to shake off Lauren Etame-Mayer and with his third touch bulged the net just under the crossbar at the top right of the goalkeeper.
The goal would pave the way to Rooney’s path to greatness, where he went on to star for Manchester United, playing 559 times after signing from Everton in 2004, to scoring 253 goals. The clash against Gor Mahia will open a new chapter in Rooney’s life as a Toffee.
