Zanzibar blanked Burundi 4-0 in their opening match of Group C of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup at Mumias Sports Complex, on Sunday.

Three goals in seven minutes was all Zanzibar needed to tear Burundi apart and rule during the thrilling encounter.

Aggrey Morris put Zanzibar ahead in the 15th minute after he headed home Abdulham Gulam’s corner kick.

Zanzibar upped their hunt for more goals and their efforts were rewarded three minutes later when Hauzimana Hassan tapped the ball in his own net in an attempt to clear a dangerous ball in the box.

Mohammed Salum finished Ahmed Malik’s cross from the right flank for Zanzibar to lead 3-0 at the breather.

Burundi managed to settle in the second half and took charge of the proceedings but poor finishing cost them clear opportunities.

Fiston Nzomukunda had himself to blame after Waziri Salim dispossessed him the ball in the box in the 56th minute with goalkeeper Mwalim Ali to beat.

Ndayozenga came close to scoring for the losers in the 60th minute but Ali deflected his shot for a fruitless corner kick.

Nzeyimana Hussein damaged his team when he scored yet another own goal in the 67th minute to seal their fate.

Burundi meet Tanzania in their second match on Wednesday.
