Presidential hopefuls made campaign stops in regions their opponents had just toured as competition intensified heading into the weekend when the ban on harambees takes effect.
This weekend, the aspirants are in a frenzy of harambees before the law Sunday bars those seeking elective positions from presiding over funds drives.
The Elections Act prohibits aspirants for various seats from participating in a harambee eight months to the General Election due on March 4, next year.
One risks disqualification should they violate the decree. However, the ban does not extend to a fundraising for candidate for an election or a political party.
Recently, presidential aspirants have concentrated their campaigns at the Coast region in the past week to court teachers at their annual Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association Conference in Mombasa.
Vote bloc
Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi separately addressed teachers who constitute a key vote bloc.
Kalonzo assured tourists and other visitors that Kenya is safe despite the recent travel advisories, especially from the United States of America.
To demonstrate this, the VP made several stop overs along Garsen-Lamu road addressing roadside rallied throughout the 200 kilometer stretch.Mudavadi decried recent terrorist attacks in the country and urged the government security agencies to change tactics in dealing with terrorist attacks perpetrated by militants from the neigbouring Somalia.
Mudavadi said Kenyans cannot continue to live in fear of terrorists and urged security agencies to seal all loopholes exploited by the terror groups.There also appears a strategy to return to areas that opponents had toured perhaps to gain an upper hand.
Today, Kalonzo will tour Lamu County hot on the heels of Mudavadi’s visit to Mpeketoni Friday. Kenya National Congress presidential hopeful Peter Kenneth had addressed a rally in Lamu last weekend. Today, Kenneth will hold a series of meetings in Murang’a County.
From Lamu, Mudavadi will today and tomorrow pitch camp in Nyeri County. Eldoret North MP William Ruto will be campaigning in West Pokot, Baringo and parts of the South Rift.
Kenneth will have a series of rallies and fund raisers in Murang’a County today and tomorrow. Today, he will hold meetings in Kiharu, Kandara and Gatanda before heading to Limuru on Sunday. In the morning, he will flag off IRA walk at Nyayo National Stadium.
