Parliament’s Legal Affairs Department has voted unanimously to make lawyer PLO Lumumba the next director for the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC).

This was despite strident opposition by one of its members, Nominated MP George Nyamweya.

Committee chairman Abdikadir Muhamed yesterday tabled in Parliament a report recommending Lumumba, lawyer Pravin Bowry and Prof Jane Onsongo for formal appointment by the President.

Besides acknowledging Mr Nyamweya’s objections, the report urges the Attorney-General to propose an amendment of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act to compel Parliament to approve and vet all senior positions in Government.

Parliament has that role, especially for all constitutional office holders, under the Proposed Constitution.

According to the report, Nyamweya disapproved of Lumumba and Bowry’s nominations, alleging that Lumumba was not suitable for the office because he is a dishonest politician who betrayed some people at the Bomas Constitution Conference when he served as secretary to the defunct Constitution of Kenya Review Commission.

According to the report, Nyamweya did not want Bowry to join KACC because he has been a lawyer for many corruption suspects but the committee vetoed his objections with a majority vote.
