MPs want Omamo sacked over Mwinzi's appointment to South Korea

The National Assembly yesterday shelved the debate on the controversy surrounding the appointment of Mwende Mwinzi to Seoul, South Korea ignoring its conditioned approval.

This came even as Members of Parliament called for the sacking of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ambassador Raychelle Omamo and action taken against her for being in breach of the law and abuse of office.

Majority Leader Amos Kimunya sought the indulgence of Speaker Justin Muturi to give him three weeks leave to establish whether Mwinzi has complied with the House resolution to renounce her US citizenship before taking up the diplomatic role.

Though the MPs called for an urgent response, they faulted the CS’s action, saying it flies in the face of the House proceeding to appoint Ms Mwinzi in total disregard of the House resolutions based on two reports.

“The CS should be censured and action taken against her for abuse of law and abuse of office. That is the fact. If indeed the CS has done the appointment without the nominee complying with the conditions of this House, then she is in breach of law and action taken are unconstitutional,” said Richard Ole Kenta, the chair of the Committee on Implementation that approved her appointment with a caveat.

He regretted to note that the matter has been pending for the last two years and being dropped from the Order Paper, for one reason or another.

“This matter has been taken out of the Order Paper several times. I want to tell Parliament and the people of Kenya that the decisions of this House are not in vain. The report was conclusive. Parliament won the court case against Mwinzi,” said Ole Kenta, in reference to Kimunya’s plea to get a conclusive report from Omamo and Attorney General Kihara Kariuki.

The Majority Leader informed the House that has he had initiated the process by seeking a statement within the government and written the necessary letters to Kariuki and the CS.
