A 44-year-old man accused of killing his wife at their home in Nairobi’s Umoja estate will spend Christmas period behind bars.
A Makadara court yesterday declined to free Daniel Kibiru Thiongo, who is under investigation for the murder of his wife.
Kibiru was first presented before Makadara Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga on Friday and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations sought 21 days to hold him for the murder of Catherine Mumbi Wanjohi.
The magistrate allowed the investigators to hold the suspect for another 14 days.
The matter will mentioned in court on December 31.
The court allowed a second postmortem examination to be conducted on the body of Mumbi after Kibiru told the court that he wanted an independent postmortem conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
On December 14, government pathologist Charles Muturi conducted a postmortem on Mumbi's body and concluded that she had died of asphyxia (lack of oxygen supply to the body).
He said Mumbi’s body had visible injuries on the head and her lips were bruised.
Mumbi was found dead at their home at Pendo Court in Umoja on December 12.
The court declined to give orders that Kibiru should be allowed to take part in Mumbi’s burial plans.
The court lifted an earlier order stopping the burial of Mumbi, which was set for last Saturday.
